Breakfast at Tiffany's
While Holly Golightly did not make an appearance, plenty of other folks were on-hand at the Indianapolis Tiffany and Company store this morning to see the unveiling of a very special jewel: the Vince Lombardi Trophy.
The legendary jewelry maker has made the Super Bowl Championship trophies dating back to the beginning of the game in the late 60s.
"The design of the trophy has been the same for 46 years now," says Tom O'Rourke with Tiffany and Company. "The only change that we've made to the design of the trophy is the design of the NFL shield."
He says the jewelry maker has a long history with creating sports trophies. "It dates back to the 1800s, when
we made the August Belmont Cup for horse racing. We make the World Series Trophy, the NBA's Championship Trophy, the MLS Cup, and the AFC and NFC championship trophies," says O'Rourke.
Guests were treated to a sneak peek of the trophy, as well as breakfast (and some shopping for those who felt so inclined).
O'Rourke says the Vince Lombardi Trophy takes about four months to produce and is made in New Jersey. He says the manufacturing process is less like jewelry and more like Tiffany's collection of sterling silver serving dishes.
This particular piece of hardware will be awarded to the winner of Super Bowl XLVI, held in Indianapolis on February 5th, 2012.
